Monroe council honors retiring officer Perry Daniel Kaske Jr., approves sidearm and K‑9 transfer

Monroe City Council on Dec. 9 adopted a resolution honoring veteran officer Perry Daniel Kaske Jr. and approved two retiree-related transfers: awarding Kaske his service sidearm at a nominal cost and transferring ownership of K‑9 Diesel to Kaske.

Chief Rhett Boland told the council staff recommended honoring Kaske and described the statutory authority under which the transfers are permitted. "Staff feels it is fitting and proper to honor him by awarding him with his side arm to cherish during retirement," Boland said.

Council moved and seconded the resolution; members voiced their approval and the mayor ordered the resolution entered in the permanent minutes. The proclamation included Kaske's full name and retirement date and noted his 31 years of service with the Monroe Police Department in policing, K‑9 handling, community intervention, and special-response teams.

The resolution cites state statutory authority for the actions, noting municipal discretion to award a retiring officer a service sidearm and to transfer custody of retired service animals to prior handlers, subject to eligibility to possess firearms and applicable rules on disposition of retired service animals.

The resolution records the council's appreciation and extends best wishes for Kaske's retirement. The motion was approved by voice vote and added to the official record; council did not set further action items during the meeting.
