Crete Public Schools posts mixed academic results; middle school flagged for targeted support

Dr. Hayek, the district’s chief academic officer, presented 2024–25 academic results to the board, describing district demographics and areas for improvement. "Crete Public Schools is at 29% English learners," Hayek said, and noted the district’s 66% free-and-reduced lunch population is substantially higher than the state average.

Hayek provided proficiency rates: 55% proficient in ELA and 56% proficient in math—both below the state averages he cited (59% and 58%, respectively). He also said the district consistently outperforms the state in science and that longitudinal cohort data showed pockets of growth: four of six cohorts improved in ELA and three of six improved in math.

On accountability, Hayek reported the district rating as 'Good' overall; the elementary remains 'Good', the intermediate school 'Great', the middle school dropped from 'Great' to 'Good', and the high school remains 'Good'. He said the middle school has an identified need that qualifies it for targeted support focused on English learner services, a designation that remains in place for three years and will be re-evaluated after spring 2026 assessments and ELPA results.

Hayek set a district proficiency goal: a 60% proficiency floor across grades and content areas, and described planned steps to use new data tools, curriculum alignment, and grant-supported instructional investments (including CLSD funds) to close gaps.

Hayek concluded by noting the board previously viewed a summary video during a working meeting and that the presentation will be posted on the district website for public review.
