Habitat for Humanity project: Sequim sponsoring CHIP grant, construction target set for 2026

Sequim planning staff reported on Nov. 18 that a Habitat for Humanity affordable housing project sponsored by the City has an active CHIP infrastructure grant through the Washington State Department of Commerce.

Staff said the project has land-use entitlements and is moving toward final engineering and a site-construction permit. The grant is valid through June 2027, and staff noted that the developer will need to begin construction in 2026 to meet that timeline.

Staff framed the update as an example of the city's role: sponsoring grants and facilitating infrastructure rather than serving as the developer. "They do have land use entitlement from our department. They need to do their final engineering, and then they can submit for their grading plan and for their construction their site construction permit," staff said.

Next step: Habitat for Humanity needs to complete engineering and apply for construction permits to meet the grant timeline; the Planning Commission acknowledged the city has facilitated entitlement and will continue to monitor progress.
