Humboldt County reports: food pantry totals, office hours and infrastructure repairs; closed session called

Board members provided a series of routine reports and operational updates during the meeting.

A board member reported food pantry activity for December: "over 9,000 pounds of food" distributed countywide; local distributions included the Humboldt drive-thru (121 families, 333 family members), Humboldt Homes (55 families, 68 family members) and Livermore (24 families, 39 family members). The board was told the next drive-thru distribution is scheduled for Feb. 12.

Members also discussed an incident when some county offices appeared to be closed on a Friday and agreed the public should be better notified when offices deviate from regular posted hours. One board member summarized the legal division of responsibility: "State code is we set the hours for the when the courthouse is open. The elected officials set the hours for when their offices are open," and urged clearer public notices.

On infrastructure, board members debated options for a failing drainage pipe and possible staged repairs. One cost estimate discussed increasing pipe size from 24 inches to 36 inches, which would raise costs by an estimated ~$30,000 for the parcel under consideration; members discussed addressing 3,000-foot sections in phases to manage expense.

Before adjournment the chair moved to enter closed session pursuant to "Iowa code 20Dash17" for negotiation strategy. A roll call vote was held and the transcript records affirmative votes (Bruce Aye; Bob Aye; additional affirmations recorded) and the board entered closed session.

No formal policy changes were adopted in these items; the reports resulted in staff directions for notifications, staged repair planning and further follow-up.
