Trenton council approves library carpet, DPW roof and storage project change order

The Trenton City Council on Dec. 22 approved a series of municipal building projects, including replacement of the library carpet, authorization to award the DPW roof replacement contract and a change order for a DPW storage building.

Library: City librarian Miss Jensen said the Veterans Memorial Library’s carpet (installed in 1999) shows major traffic damage. She presented local contractor quotes for the 21,000-square-foot building and explained an estimated $42,000 special cost to move books from shelves during installation. The council approved a motion to accept Joe's Carpet Service for the replacement, to be funded from the municipal building bond.

DPW roof: DPS Director Mr. Sargent said the existing DPW building roof is about 35 years old, has multiple leaks and received six bids; the low bidder’s proposal was nonresponsive for failing to include a bid bond. Staff recommended KJP Roofing & Sheet Metal at a base cost of $320,000 plus a 10% contingency for unforeseen issues. Council authorized proceeding with that recommendation.

DPW storage change order: Mr. Sargent requested authorization for a change order on the JS Vig contract to proceed with phase two work that includes demolition of old storage bays, reconstruction of roof rafters on two storage areas, and construction of a 25-by-60 bulk storage structure to hold materials such as cold patch and topsoil. The change order amount approved was $256,268.

Council asked a few clarifying questions about square footage and structural condition; staff indicated the roof area is approximately 14,000 square feet and that the structural condition will be addressed in subsequent work. All items were approved without recorded opposition.
