Box Elder foundation approves Northrop Grumman-funded teacher grants, tables remaining awards until January

The Box Elder School District foundation voted to approve teacher funding items covered by a Northrop Grumman corporate grant and by the foundation's student health and wellness account, and to table remaining funding requests until the board's January meeting.

Unidentified Speaker 3 presented the executive committee's recommendations and identified several requests that were duplicates or outside district-approved curricular choices. Northrop Grumman has increased its annual grant this year to $20,000, and board members discussed which line items would be paid from that corporate gift versus the foundation's unrestricted or student-wellness accounts.

Unidentified Speaker 1 moved “to approve the grants for the Northrop Grumman or funded by the Northrop Grumman grant and the SCL of student health and wellness, and I motion let's say motion tabled the remaining awarded grants until the January meeting.” The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.

Board members emphasized fiscal timing: the foundation's unrestricted balance was reported at roughly $23,000 and the student health and wellness account at about $60,000; with recent fundraising proceeds the group estimated available funds approaching $83,000 once all receipts post. Several trustees asked staff to confirm how prior-round approvals and any outstanding encumbrances would affect current balances before final payout in January.

The discussion also covered scholarship accounts with limited remaining principal under current payout amounts: speakers noted the Heber Orem and Daniel Star funds have lower remaining lifespans at current award levels, while the Wanda Larson account holds a larger balance. Trustees debated whether to adjust award amounts to encourage applications or preserve donor-intended terms.
