Commissioners flag substantial repair needs at county jail and note ongoing fire watch

A commissioner reported a recent walkthrough of the county jail and raised concerns about significant renovation needs, including infrastructure and technology that will affect future capital budgets.

“There's no Internet. There's no infrastructure,” the commissioner said during his report, describing gaps that will require considerable work and urging fellow commissioners to tour the facility. Staff and commissioners discussed past budget estimates and cautioned that costs could be much higher than previously assumed.

Separately, staff described an ongoing fire watch while Honeywell works to repair relay connections on alarm panels; the county advised that some outbuildings and a single wing remain affected, and the fire department planned a final walk‑through.

Department heads also reported on pilot program grants that are coming to a close and a “wish list” of preapproved items from Easterseals totaling about $25,000; staff said they would bring proposed amendments and item lists to an upcoming meeting so the county can expend available grant funds before deadlines.

Commissioners requested further details and asked staff to place capital‑project proposals and grant amendments on the agenda for follow‑up.
