Board updates graduation requirements to reflect DESE competency determination change

The board approved an update to the district’s graduation requirements (policy IKF) to clarify that U.S. history will be part of the competency determination for students beginning with the class of 2027.

Administration explained the change was prompted by Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requirements and by the need to ensure the district’s submitted graduation requirements and associated state forms are consistent. The added language mirrors the existing competency determination language for science, math and English.

A trustee noted the administrative time required to prepare materials and the prospect that statewide graduation and competency rules may continue to evolve, but the board proceeded to a voice vote and recorded affirmative responses. Administration will submit the updated policy and the associated required documentation to DESE.

The action was narrow and procedural: no further changes to coursework or credits were discussed at the meeting.
