Commission reviews Section 106 report for Chandler Executive Airport hangar; soil and interior abatement planned

The Historic Preservation Commission reviewed a Section 106 report for a hangar located at 716 West Kearney Boulevard at Chandler Executive Airport.

David Densley described the proposed federal action as interior abatement of asbestos and lead-based paint and limited soil remediation where paint has fallen into surrounding soils. Staff estimated about 140 cubic yards of lead-impacted soils will be removed — “I believe, 16 dump trucks” — and that removal would entail excavating approximately six inches in the east and south side areas described in the report. Densley said the action is remediation-only to ready the site for later steps; no roof demolition is part of this federal action.

Commissioners questioned whether the hangar might contribute to the Fresno Chandler Executive Airport historic district; the consultant told the commission the hangar is stylistically and chronologically removed from the district’s contributing buildings and is not associated with the district’s period of significance.

Next steps: Staff will complete the Section 106 record; further changes beyond remediation would return to the commission for review.
