Hammond grants easement to NIPSCO for power relocation linked to Little Calumet River bridge work

The Hammond Redevelopment Commission approved an easement for NIPSCO to relocate electric facilities onto property owned by the redevelopment commission east of the Kennedy Avenue bridge as part of the Little Calumet River Basin reconstruction project.

Paul Weerling, a representative from Bowman working with NIPSCO, described the need to move facilities to maintain electric service during demolition and elevation of the Kennedy Avenue bridge. Staff said the affected parcel is currently an outlot not intended for future development and the proposed alignment will allow continued service during construction and afterward.

Commissioner Myricks moved the easement approval; the motion was seconded and carried 5-0 on a roll-call vote. Staff noted the related Little Calumet River bridge project is advancing under the basin development commission and that contractual coordination with NIPSCO was the reason for the requested easement.

The approval grants NIPSCO rights necessary to perform the relocation work; the commission recorded no conditions in the transcript beyond standard easement terms to be executed.
