Students and counselor describe ‘wake up wellness’ and quiet‑lunch pilot at Newfields Elementary

School counselor Tracy Elward and two students presented programs aimed at supporting social and emotional wellness at Newfields Elementary.

Elward described a morning 'wake up wellness' program that gives students a daily menu of activities (for example, calm or energetic options) to help them self‑regulate and feel ownership of their day. She said the school uses a character‑trait curriculum (Purposeful People) and holds weekly lessons that support resilience, belonging and peer relationships.

Students described 'Quiet Lunch,' a recent pilot that offers a lower‑stimulation dining option with soft music and quiet activities; Elward said the program helps students who need a calmer environment and that it has been well received. The pair also highlighted after‑school clubs, assemblies led by fifth‑grade student hosts, and leadership projects, which staff said increase student engagement and opportunities for peer mentorship.

Board members thanked Elward and the students for the presentation and for the emphasis on proactive social‑emotional supports; the board noted it values the full‑time counselor role and encouraged continued use of student presentations for community engagement.
