Council honors 9-1-1 specialist and recognizes hunger, homelessness and Festival of Trees

At its Nov. 25 meeting the Talbot County Council presented several recognitions. The council bestowed a commendation on Hannah Ward (Talbot County DES) as the Maryland 9-1-1 Board’s Communications Specialist of the Year; presenters praised her calmness, multitasking and customer service. Council approved the commendation by motion and roll call.

The council also adopted a proclamation declaring November as Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. Julie Lowe, speaking for local service providers, said the shelters are operating at capacity with about 140 people on a wait list and more than 60 people housed through the county’s family, single and transitional shelter arrangements; she noted senior homelessness as a particular concern. The council urged public recognition and support of local nonprofits addressing hunger and homelessness.

Finally, the council read a proclamation recognizing the Festival of Trees’ 40th anniversary and thanked organizers for raising funds for the Talbot Hospice Foundation (testimony cited cumulative fundraising of more than $3,700,000).
