Hubbardston hires retired DLS official for short-term accounting work to reconcile books

The Hubbardston Select Board on Dec. 20 approved contracting with Marsha Bohink, a recently retired Division of Local Services official, to assist with short-term accounting work aimed at closing fiscal 2025, reconciling balances and certifying free cash.

Heather briefed the board on outreach to several accounting firms and consultants; Bohink provided a phased proposal to review prior-year entries, reconcile the chart of accounts, assist with the FY27 budget forecasting and help the new treasurer/collector transition. Bohink’s proposed rate is $100 per hour. The board discussed limited budget line availability and the likelihood of a reserve-fund request to cover costs once the scope is clearer.

Heather said the work is intended to be time-limited and goal-oriented: get past backlogged entries, certify free cash and put the town on a steadier accounting footing. Board members noted municipal accounting candidates are scarce; the alternative—an accounting firm—would likely cost more. The board voted to accept Bohink’s proposal and authorized Heather to follow up with Mary Leroux about possible additional part-time coverage for payroll and bill pay until longer-term staffing is resolved.

Heather said staff will return to the board with specifics on hours and budget transfers at the Dec. 29 meeting if necessary.
