Commission approves STBG-funded study for Tractor Road/Nicholas intersection — $944,000 (80% reimbursable)

Christian County’s commission voted to approve a federal STBG program agreement to study, design and potentially construct safety and traffic-flow improvements at the Tractor Road/Nicholas intersection.

Highway Administrator Miss Beagle told the commission the intersection currently operates as a four-way stop and can back up more than 100 vehicles during peak periods. Staff proposed using the county’s Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) allocation to fund a traffic study, design recommendations and possible construction in 2027. Miss Beagle said the 80% reimbursement portion of the award equates to $944,000 to cover the study and early design phases; final design and construction would depend on the study’s recommendation.

Commissioners asked whether a traffic signal was an option; staff said the site is not on two state routes, so a signal is unlikely, and the study will evaluate options such as a roundabout. The commission approved the STBG program agreement for the 'Tractor Road Nicholas Improvements' by voice vote.

Staff said next steps include the traffic study and then returning to the commission with design recommendations and cost estimates before committing to construction.
