Commission to authorize chairman to manage district business after commissioner’s death

County staff and the commission discussed a resolution at the Dec. 1 Limestone County work session to allow the chairman to carry out routine District 1 duties after the death of Commissioner Daryl Samet.

Drew (staff) explained the legal background, stating that under Alabama law the vacancy created by a death in office may be filled either by appointment from the governor or by election, and that the resolution would authorize the chairman to perform necessary day-to-day activities — such as personnel actions and purchase-order signings — that cannot be delayed until a new commissioner is seated.

The chair emphasized transparency and said the measure is limited to routine operations, citing examples such as signing time cards and processing purchase orders. The chair also said he would not cast a vote on actions that could create a conflict and that the county had consulted ACCA for guidance.

The resolution was added to the upcoming formal agenda. No formal vote on the resolution was recorded during the work session.
