Homewood council reads ordinance to ban parking on east side of Linden Avenue; first reading carried to Jan. 12

Homewood’s City Council on Dec. 22 heard a first reading of an ordinance that would ban parking on the east side of Linden Avenue between Rees Street and Oxmoor Road and make violations misdemeanors.

“Be it ordained by the city council of the city of Homewood, Alabama as follows,” Mr. Jackson read, describing a text that would make it unlawful to park along the eastern side of Linden Avenue between the two intersections and would authorize the chief of police to install markings and no-parking signs. The ordinance text also references enforcement under section 1-8 of the City of Homewood code of ordinances.

The measure, listed on the agenda as O11225, was read into the record but not voted on. Mayor Anders announced the council will carry the item over to the Jan. 12 council meeting for further consideration and possible formal action.

Why it matters: the proposal would alter on-street parking along a residential corridor and gives the police department authority to install signage and markings to enforce a no-parking zone. The ordinance also makes violating the rule a misdemeanor punishable under the city code, which could affect residents, visitors and delivery vehicles that routinely use the street.

What’s next: the council will revisit the ordinance at its Jan. 12 meeting; officials directed staff to include any necessary exhibits (the reading referenced an “Exhibit A”) and to prepare for further public notice and enforcement planning.
