Several residents urged Morris Township officials on Dec. 17 to consider regulating two-stroke gas-powered leaf blowers, citing air pollution, noise and worker health.
Charlie Schachter, a longtime township resident, told the committee he had begun a petition and asked for an opportunity to make a 25-minute presentation at a future meeting. "I've started a petition... asking people to support the idea that Morris Township should regulate two-stroke gas engine leaf blowers on some level," Schachter said. He said neighboring municipalities are exploring similar steps and offered to bring experts and local officials to speak on the transition to electric equipment.
Committee members responded with interest but caution. One committee member said working with surrounding towns could produce a coordinated approach and noted large multi-acre properties in Morris Township might require exemptions or special rules. Resident Jennifer Nielsen said she was "1000 percent in favor of leaf blower bans" and said she would sign the petition.
The committee requested the petitioner coordinate with staff about timing for a future presentation; no formal action or ordinance was introduced at the meeting.
Next steps: petitioners and staff will work to identify a suitable meeting date in the new year for a presentation and discussion of potential regulatory options and possible regional coordination.
