Elena Saterian, chair of the Glendale Housing Authority, read a proclamation at the authority's Dec. 16 meeting recognizing the body's founding in December 1975 and declaring the week surrounding the meeting as Glendale Housing Authority Week.
"Whereas the Glendale Housing Authority has made a significant impact in the Glendale community and neighborhoods by funding a variety of affordable housing programs and projects," Saterian read during the proclamation, citing Section 8, inclusionary housing and the rental rights program.
The proclamation and a short video were followed by remarks from trustees and guests who recalled early operations—when Section 8 was managed by two people and applicants could walk in—and credited sustained federal allocations and redevelopment set-aside funds with enabling growth.
An attendee referenced past partnerships and projects that have promoted homeownership and new units; one trustee praised Habitat for Humanity collaborations that helped families become homeowners. Multiple speakers thanked staff for their work amid constrained resources and high demand.
Speakers also acknowledged the authority's staffing challenges and the emotional toll on employees who must turn away people in need. An authority member remarked that limited funding means staff often do "the absolute most that can be done with the resources that we're able to provide to you."
The meeting included a brief recognition of Community Development Director Bradley Calford, and participants gathered for a commemorative photo to mark the milestone. No formal policy decisions accompanied the proclamation.
