The Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission voted Dec. 17 to approve the replacement of two accessory structures at Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens, 1235 Long Point Road.
Planner Emily Pigott detailed the request, saying the applicant will install two metal storage buildings — a 1,200-square-foot enclosed structure for golf-cart storage and a 3,000-square-foot open-air structure for tractor storage — and had already demolished a greenhouse for which they sought retroactive approval. "The two proposed storage buildings are intended to support the historic use of the property, which is agricultural," Pigott said, adding that the demolished greenhouse and the existing sheds were not identified contributing resources to the National Register listing.
Pigott said only the golf-cart storage would sit inside the National Register listing boundary and that existing vegetation would prevent visibility from nearby contributing resources. Staff recommended approval with the condition that "all major changes shall be processed pursuant to section 20-15" of the Charleston County historic preservation ordinance.
A commissioner moved to approve the application with the staff condition, noting the structures’ compatibility with the property’s historic and cultural character. The motion carried on a roll-call vote; the chair noted this is the commission’s final decision and explained that anyone with a substantial interest may appeal to the Circuit Court of Charleston County within 30 calendar days.
The commission’s action approves the applicant’s described plans but requires that any major alterations return for further review under the ordinance.
