Disabilities Commission readies AI ad hoc letter, asks members for edits ahead of a January vote

The Disabilities Commission reviewed a draft two- to three-page letter from its AI Opportunities & Risks ad hoc and discussed priorities for sending a concise but substantive statement to the City Council.

Chair Elliott said the draft attempts to distill a large body of work and asked members to submit edits before the cutoff so the item can be agendized for a vote at the next meeting. Commissioners praised the draft’s coverage of risks and opportunities and suggested putting concrete recommendations on the first page so decision-makers would immediately see action items.

Commissioner Gordon and other members noted the volume of background material linked in the draft and urged finding a balance between fully documenting concerns and delivering a short, actionable set of recommendations. The chair proposed a feedback deadline of January 2 and said the commission would aim to vote the item at the January meeting so the letter can be forwarded to the City Council.

No formal vote on the letter occurred at the December meeting; the commission treated the session as a working review and scheduled the item for formal consideration once feedback is compiled.
