The Norwalk City Council voted to table a zoning amendment that would permit gates and barriers along Highway 28 for commercial properties, sending the item back to staff for additional work and outreach.
Council discussion centered on aesthetic standards, whether gates would rust or require coatings, and how existing businesses would be grandfathered. One councilmember sought clearer aesthetic qualifications for gates; another noted the difficulty of defining “beautification” in code. Staff said the current draft had been written with known interested parties in mind and that the second meeting in January would likely produce proposed language.
Councilmembers asked staff to survey businesses planning to install gates and to prepare recommended language addressing coating, material, and grandfathering clauses. The motion to table passed with the understanding staff will return with a recommendation at the second meeting in January.
