Commission discusses Hangtown Creek garden proposal, asks volunteers to present plans

Staff briefed the commission on a volunteer-led proposal for the Hangtown Creek Garden, a naturalist-oriented community garden behind the former Mosquito Outfitters building at Broadway and Maine.

The presentation emphasized that the area is intended as a naturalist space focused on native plants and education, not typical ornamental gardening. Staff noted recent clearing and flood/fuel-reduction work had sometimes removed native plants and that the department wants clearer boundaries and better signage to protect important habitat. "We're not trying to bring in extra plants that aren't native to that particular space," said Speaker 3 while describing the proposal.

Commissioners said they want Community Pride volunteers and other stakeholders to appear at a future meeting to discuss ideas before any formal rules are imposed. Speaker 6 recalled prior feedback from the volunteer group that they did not want overly strict management and urged an open dialogue.
