Glynn County recognizes volunteers who installed microchip scanner stations at county parks

Glynn County commissioners on Dec. 4 recognized members of the Golden Isles of Realtors Leadership Academy for donating and installing microchip scanner stations at county parks.

Lisa Gorganis, Glynn County Recreation and Parks director, introduced the volunteers and said the county is “proud to be the recipients” of the scanners, noting one station is already installed at Kings Park Dog Park and more installations are planned. She invited the volunteers to describe the project.

Rebecca Strother told commissioners the scanners let a finder scan a pet’s microchip and access contact information for the last registered owner, which can speed reunification and reduce the workload for animal control. She said the project included a community adoption event at which the group paid to microchip and register 100 animals free of charge, but that only about 12 people attended that event. Strother said the group is also coordinating to place scanners in Blackshear.

Gorganis asked residents to visit the new station at Kings Park Dog Park and said instructions at each station explain how to use the scanner and what to do if a found animal has no chip.

No formal action was required or taken by the board on the presentation. The recognition was ceremonial; commissioners thanked the volunteers and moved on to the next agenda item.
