New boat-rental business, conservation cleanup and parking top Port Richey committee discussion

A new local business owner told the Port Richey committee the boat-rental operation at American Marina has been open about six weeks and is marketing a higher-end, safety-focused experience for visitors.

"It's definitely, our main goal is obviously safety," said Speaker 6, who described the service model as providing towels, ice and water and said the fleet is new and ready for customers. Speaker 6 said the business is still finalizing financing to acquire another nearby property (Sunset Landing Marina) and expected the deal to close within about 30 days.

Committee members discussed nearby county-owned conservation land that has recently been cleared of debris. Speaker 6 and others said the parcel is conservation land owned by the county and that Public Works will provide a to-do list for volunteer cleanup and invasive-species control. "It's county land... technically conservation land," Speaker 6 said, adding that county staff had suggested gates and lighting to reduce safety problems.

Speakers also explored nonmotorized recreation: kayak and paddle-board launch points, a marked paddle trail and floating docks to support family-friendly activities rather than jet skis or large motorboats. "We wanna make boats... for nonmotorized boats or electric boats of the 2 horsepower," Speaker 2 said, describing a plan to promote small craft and a paddle trail to nearby mangroves.

The committee reviewed logistics for an upcoming multi-day holiday event at Waterfront Park, including a band, a screening of a film and a tree-lighting ceremony; members flagged limited parking because a previously used lot remains fenced for construction. Speaker 5 said the police captain indicated enforcement would be 'forgiving' as long as emergency access remains clear and that staff will post guidance online for attendees.

No formal permits or council votes were decided at this meeting; Speaker 4 invited the business owner to present during the next council meeting’s three-minute public-comment slot so councilors can hear the business plan directly.
