East Baton Rouge Parish School Board honors student artists and fall sports champions

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on Dec. 4 recognized students and athletic teams from across the district for academic, artistic and athletic achievements.

Katie Sharp, the district’s visual arts specialist, announced winners of the district’s Season’s Greetings holiday art contest, naming Lena Park (Wildwood) as the elementary winner, Reina (Rina) Danuran (McKinley) as the middle-school winner (who was not present), and Taylor Coleman (Scotlandville High School) as the high-school winner. For the first time the contest also named a best-in-show overall winner: Suri Simon of McKinley. “You did amazing work, and I can’t wait to see what you do next,” Sharp said as she presented awards.

The board also recognized the district and charter students of the year. Ms. Williams presented district winners including Bryant Gosa (elementary), Olivia Pang (middle school) and Lucy Thomas (high school), and charter winners including Jace Williams and Avery Harrow of Helix Mentorship and Marine Academy. Principals, teachers and parents were invited forward to be photographed with board members.

Athletic director T.J. Pugh recognized fall sports champions, highlighting McKinley High’s undefeated football season and McKinley Middle’s undefeated volleyball team. Pugh thanked coaches, parents, central-office staff and school personnel for their support and urged community members to attend upcoming basketball tournaments and championship games.

The recognitions took place during the meeting’s opening segment; the board then moved into the regular agenda.
