Metropolitan Council approves "mayor for the day" resolution backing expanded homeless services

The Metropolitan Council of East Baton Rouge Parish on Nov. 25 unanimously approved a special-resolution request from "mayor for the day" Juliet urging the council and community partners to strengthen services for people experiencing homelessness.

Councilman (reading the resolution) described the measure as a call to broaden access to meals, temporary and permanent housing, and supportive services, and asked the council to join the mayor-for-the-day in prioritizing expanded efforts. Councilman Mote moved to approve the resolution; Councilwoman Coleman seconded the motion, and the council voted to adopt it. Juliet signed the resolution on the chamber floor.

The resolution frames the issue as a communitywide priority, citing food insecurity and limited access to services for people experiencing homelessness and calls for collaboration among the mayor's office, the Metropolitan Council, community organizations and businesses. The measure is ceremonial but signals council support and encourages partnership and local action.

Because the resolution was presented as a mayor-for-the-day initiative, it does not create new spending authorization in itself. The council did not attach a specific funding source or implementation schedule during the Nov. 25 action. The adopted text asks relevant departments and community partners to pursue ways to expand meals and housing opportunities and to report on progress in future meetings.
