East Central ISD honors coaches and trainers after student’s sudden cardiac arrest

The East Central Independent School District Board of Trustees on Dec. 16 recognized football coaches and athletic trainers for their response to a student athlete’s sudden cardiac arrest at practice. The board called the staffers’ actions “nothing short of heroic,” saying they “relied on their training, worked as a team, and quite literally saved a life.”

The board named coaches Aaron Shaven and Juan Rodriguez and trainers Derek Dixon, Corey Johnson and Tana Salinas during the meeting’s opening recognitions. Family members of the student and the staff were present for the acknowledgement.

Board members said the incident underscores the district’s responsibility for student safety beyond athletics, and thanked staff for being prepared. The recognition included a brief photo line and public applause.

No formal board action or policy change related to emergency response was proposed during the meeting; the segment was presented as a public acknowledgment and expression of gratitude.

The board proceeded from the recognition to regular business, including a public hearing on the district’s financial rating and several construction and calendar agenda items.
