Scott County road department proposes CDL safety coordinator to improve roadside maintenance

Scott County road department staff on Dec. 5 proposed a CDL/safety coordinator position to centralize roadside safety responsibilities, inspections and sign maintenance.

JR, a road department representative, told the court the role would combine existing duties and focus on roadside maintenance, sign reflectivity and liability reduction. JR said the county "started working on that back in, probably 02/16/17" and that the county has been upgrading signs: "probably 95% of our signs are high reflectivity," he said. The proposal envisions using an existing employee with an initial median pay adjustment as an incentive; staff described a starting conversation of roughly a 4% increase as a modest first step.

County staff also discussed training and backup options. The court heard that Bluegrass ad has training resources and that grant or training-reimbursement funds could cover much of CDL or CDL-related training: staff cited a $6,000-per-employee maximum reimbursement figure from the Bluegrass program, while typical training costs discussed were about $4,800–$5,200 per trainee.

Magistrates asked for more precision on duties and pay. The court asked JR and departmental leadership to write up a detailed job description and provide several compensation options for consideration at the next meeting. No formal hiring or pay decision was made at the work session.

The court supported returning with a clarified job description and multiple pay options for a vote at the next business meeting.
