Mayor, council condemn hateful incidents and report threats; mayor says city is coordinating with police and federal partners

Multiple council members used the Nov. 25 meeting to condemn hate and to express solidarity with residents of neighboring Dearborn after recent incidents. Several councilmembers described the city as diverse and urged unity, while noting that recent events had stirred emotion among constituents.

Mayor Baidoun reported a pattern of threats and harassing calls directed at him and other Muslim leaders, and said the police department and detectives apprehended one person allegedly responsible for a threat to a local mosque. The mayor said the city is documenting calls, coordinating with the FBI where appropriate, and may seek protection for officials; he asked residents to report threatening messages and said the city will prosecute where evidence supports criminal charges.

Council members also praised local volunteers and departments for holiday efforts and neighborhood services and asked for continued vigilance. No formal new policy or vote was taken; members used the communications portion of the agenda for public solidarity statements and operational updates from the police and other departments.
