Residents press for more meetings, transparency and protections for families near Red Hill

Community members used the Nov. 19 meeting to press regulators for more frequent public engagement and clearer follow‑up on long‑standing questions about Red Hill contamination and water safety.

Several speakers asked that the Fuel/FTAC commission increase meeting frequency from twice yearly to quarterly so the public can receive timelier answers. Testifiers described emotional and health impacts on military families and long delays in agency responses to earlier technical questions. Shanelle Loa framed the issue in cultural terms, saying the community are stewards of the land and urging more respect and consultation.

Jamie Simon and others said construction near Red Hill was alarming for families; the Hawaii Department of Education clarified in the meeting that no new school is being built at Red Hill and that the project is a covered play court addition to the existing Red Hill Elementary School.

Several speakers asked DOH Director Kenny Fink to deny any permit to reopen shutdown shafts until outstanding technical questions are answered and asked for written notification if the director planned to authorize reopening.
