The policy committee reviewed proposed changes to Policy 005 governing the organization and appointment of board committees.
Superintendent (Speaker 2) said the draft language authorizes the board to appoint committees and suggested committees of "no more than 3 members and a minimum of 2 members" so more board members could be involved without creating quorum issues. He noted committees authorized to take official action must operate under the Sunshine Act.
Board members expressed differing views: one argued keeping committees at two preserves current practice and avoids problems if few volunteers step forward, while another said allowing a third member expands input on agenda-setting. The superintendent recommended bringing the revised language back to the committee-of-the-whole for a first read so the full board can weigh in.
No formal vote was taken. The superintendent will add the suggested language and return the policy for broader committee review.
