The Holliston School Committee voted to implement the Math Leveling Advisory Committee’s recommendation for differentiated math pathways beginning in grade 7, including an option for students to take full Algebra 1 in grade 8.
The advisory committee met from June through November and considered three models: differentiated pathways beginning in grade 7 with Algebra 1 available in grade 8; differentiated pathways beginning in grade 8 with an Algebra 1 option; and no leveling. The committee reported that the advisory group—composed of teachers, administrators and community representatives—voted 11–1 in favor of the grade‑7 differentiated pathway model.
Committee members stressed equity and fluidity: pathways should allow students to move between levels without financial barriers or closed tracks. Members discussed options to provide in‑school supports to avoid out‑of‑pocket summer courses for families and noted a local tutor had helped the advisory group consider access issues.
A formal motion to adopt the recommendation specified at least two levels in grade 7 and at least two levels in grade 8, with a full Algebra 1 option. The motion was seconded and approved at the meeting.
Implementation and next steps: the administration will draft implementation details, scheduling plans and equity safeguards for committee review. The advisory group remains available to support planning and the committee expects to return to the topic in February with specifics on course descriptions, scheduling, and mechanisms for student movement between pathways.
