Baltimore County Human Relations Commission sets Feb. 27 symposium date, discusses $5,000 budgeting cap and meeting format

Commissioners at the Baltimore County Human Relations Commission meeting on Dec. 10 proposed holding the commission’s symposium on Feb. 27 at the Town Community Center and discussed outreach strategies, modest catering needs and budget limits for 2026.

Commissioner Lucas White, speaking for the special events subcommittee, said she would ‘‘like to close the date of February 27 for our symposium’’ and described a panel-style format and the possibility of offering professional development credit for county employees. The subcommittee proposed using the community center’s free space and asked the commission to consider a small budget to cover items such as continental refreshments.

Members discussed promotion channels — flyers, Eventbrite and department tabling — and reported early engagement metrics, including ‘‘56 views in 4 days’’ on Eventbrite. Commissioners agreed outreach should include county department social channels and partner organizations to increase attendance.

On funding, a commissioner referenced a conversation with the administrative officer that indicated $5,000 has been granted to other commissions and may serve as a practical upper limit for requests; staff said a spreadsheet will be provided to collect proposed line items for a January budget request. Commissioners emphasized fiscal stewardship and encouraged subcommittees to identify low-cost vendor options or in-kind support to stretch resources.

The commission also debated meeting format for early 2026, with discussion about keeping January virtual and switching February to in-person or alternating monthly; members agreed to finalize the format change by email if a formal vote could not be held that evening.

Administrative actions recorded at the Dec. 10 meeting included empowering Mr. Skinner to take minutes for the session and approving the Oct. 23 and Nov. 12 meeting minutes.
