Board approves sale of county-owned property at 517 Cedar Street for $225,000

The Carteret County Board of Commissioners voted Dec. 15 to accept an unsolicited offer of $225,000 for county-owned property at 517 Cedar Street in Beaufort and authorized the county manager to execute the purchase-and-sale agreement.

County staff said the property was acquired in April 2011 for $185,000 and is currently used for public parking and county storage. Nick Wilson presented the offer from Styron Partners LLC, managed by Juliana Catherine Styron, and said the upset-bid process required by statute produced no qualifying competing bids.

Wilson told the board the buyer plans to convert the building to a law office and that the structure is being sold “as is.” He said the buyer estimated roughly $25,000 to rehab the interior and staff noted drainage issues that will require attention; the packet includes more detailed repair figures that were not clarified on the record.

Commissioner Waldrop moved to accept the offer and adopt resolution 2025-R-09 to authorize the sale and execution of documents; Commissioner Shand seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote.

Board materials state the sale followed the statutory upset-bid process and staff will proceed to finalize closing documents if no additional lawful objections or qualifying bids are filed.
