Board recognizes Project Search, baseball and softball teams and hears student reports

The Blount County Board of Education opened the meeting with recognitions and presentations highlighting student achievements and a long-running transition-to-work program.

Project Search: Jackie Skelly and instructor Karen Johnson described Project Search, a program serving students with intellectual disabilities. Johnson said the program began in Blount County in 2015, has celebrated its 10th year, and has had 54 interns complete the program. She described three 10-week workplace rotations, classroom lessons on job readiness and employer partnerships that include Hilton, Blount Memorial Hospital, Goodwill and several local businesses.

Athletics and school recognitions: Jed West and Coach Bennett recognized Heritage High’s record baseball season, named players who committed to colleges and thanked coaches and staff. Mark Dowlin and Coach Kevin Bean highlighted the Eagleton Lady Royals’ second-place district finish and run to sectionals. Student representatives from Eagleton, Heritage and William presented updates on playoffs, signings, fine arts events and technical certifications.

Director remarks and board praise closed the segment; the director reiterated safety and security as top priorities.
