The council heard an ordinance that would explicitly prohibit short‑term rentals—commonly known as Airbnbs—in residentially developed properties across the city and in certain scenarios involving legally nonconforming properties in commercial or manufacturing zones.
Planning Director John King said the prohibition implements prior council direction from October and that the planning commission recommended approval. King said staff reviewed regional trends and a local survey that generally supported the prohibition. The ordinance would incorporate prohibitions into the various residential zone chapters (R‑1, R‑2, RM) and address potential future state‑driven housing in commercial zones by making the prohibition explicit in the municipal code. Council closed the public hearing, moved and seconded introduction of ordinance 12‑11 and set adoption for the January 13 meeting by roll‑call vote.
