Daly City youth group outlines cultural events, says Children's Day drew thousands

The Daly City Chinese Youth Commission, a student-led group, presented to the Daly City Recreation Commission on Tuesday to outline this year’s and planned cultural events, including a children-focused “Children’s Day” and upcoming dumpling-making workshops.

“We promote cultural diversity, inclusivity, and unity in our Daly City community,” said Adam, who identified himself as a senior and the vice president of DCCYC. Faculty advisor Jeffrey Wong said the group started at Jefferson High School and now partners with Westmoor and other local campuses to broaden participation.

The presenters said the Children’s Day celebration — held annually in June — is designed as a day for children to play and show their schoolwork. Jeffrey Wong said the event has grown each year and credited partnerships with local organizations and the Recreation Department. DCCYC members said that over the past two years their events have served “about 8,000” local community members.

Commissioners asked about logistics and fundraising. DCCYC members said they typically meet online and use the Gellert Clubhouse to plan in-person activities; funding comes from community sponsors and from a small city allocation. A city staff member told commissioners the Recreation Department provided initial seed funding of about $3,000 the first year and that the event is now included in the department’s budget.

Commissioners encouraged the students’ plans to add workshops and increase outreach, and offered to share resources and contacts to support growth. The commission’s acceptance of the presentation concluded with an invitation to continue the conversation about formal partnership and support.
