Atlanta Council honors Howard Shook with proclamation and awards on his final council day

Council members, former elected officials and the mayor honored Councilmember Howard Shook on Dec. 1 as he prepares to retire after 24 years representing District 7. Mayor Andre Dickens presented Shook with the Phoenix award and the council adopted a proclamation naming Dec. 1 “Howard Shook Day.”

Speakers across the chamber praised Shook’s fiscal stewardship and mentoring role. Mayor Andre Dickens said the council’s improved reserves and the city’s triple-A credit rating reflected long-standing fiscal reforms that Shook helped shape. Multiple colleagues recalled Shook’s mentorship and leadership on finance, utilities and pension matters.

A short tribute video and remarks from former mayors and retired officials preceded the proclamation. Council member Andrea Boone and others led a round of personal tributes describing Shook as a steadying presence who prioritized neighborhoods and fiscal prudence.

Shook, who chairs the finance committee and represented Buckhead, thanked colleagues and acknowledged family in the audience. He reserved time at the end of the meeting for additional remarks and photos with former and current officials.

The council’s formal proclamation credited Shook with chairing or serving on all standing committees, guiding reserve policy and participation in pension and government-efficiency efforts. The meeting closed the public recognition with a council photo and the official proclamation on the record.
