Jackson Public Schools renames career development center for Medgar and Murley Evers

Jackson Public Schools announced it renamed its career development center the Medgar and Murley Evers Career Development Center to honor civil rights leaders Medgar and Murley Evers and to reinforce the district’s stated mission to prepare students for careers.

The district said the center offers 23 career pathway programs, "making us 1 of the largest in the state for CTE programming," and described the renaming as a way to keep the Evers' legacy of "courage, justice, and empowerment" at the center of its work. "Renaming the career development center, Jackson Public Schools honors the legacy of civil rights leaders Medgar and Murley Evers," Unidentified Speaker 2 said during the announcement.

District representatives framed the change as both symbolic and practical: the new name, they said, is intended to signal educational opportunity and to emphasize career and technical education offerings available to students. Unidentified Speaker 1 noted the breadth of programs when pointing to the center's 23 career pathways.
