Cochise County adopts volunteer 'Adopt-a-Roadway' program to expand roadside cleanups

The Cochise County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted Resolution 25-37 on Dec. 16 to establish an Adopt-a-Roadway program run by the Public Works Department.

Public Works presenter (Fazio) described the program’s purpose: “The mission is to provide opportunities for organized groups and and or individuals to make specific volunteer contributions for improving the appearance of Cochise County's roadsides,” he said, adding volunteers would agree to pick up litter along a roadway segment for a two-year period. The county will supply trash bags, safety vests, training and will collect bagged litter after cleanups. Organizers said volunteers must perform at least two cleanups per year; a sign bearing the adopter’s name will be installed after the first cleanup.

Residents who spoke during the meeting praised the measure and urged broad publicity. Supervisor comments noted the program formalizes existing informal efforts and could free county crews for other maintenance work. The board adopted the resolution by voice vote, 3–0.
