The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Dec. 11 to move forward with eliminating several ad‑hoc committees that had been used for project work, delegating project updates and decision‑making back to regular board agenda sessions.
Chair and staff said the move is intended to streamline project workflows and reduce redundant meetings, especially for committees that had sparse attendance or had not met. Commissioner Tyson made the motion to eliminate five ad‑hoc committees (Crown Event Center, Aquatic Center, Government Services Campus, Unhoused Support Center and American Rescue Plan committees); the motion was seconded and the board accepted a friendly amendment to place the item on the Dec. 15 consent agenda.
Vice Chair Jerome Jones suggested also removing the finance committee from committee structure, citing staff capacity and the existence of a professional finance team; that friendly amendment was not accepted by the motion maker. Commissioner Faircloth floated a broader view — that standing committees could also be reviewed in January to confirm whether they remain necessary — and the board agreed to revisit standing committee structure at a later meeting. The board recorded the vote and moved the item to the Dec. 15 consent agenda for formal placement.
The motion as adopted on Dec. 11 was procedural; it did not eliminate standing committees that are statutorily required (for example, the audit committee), and staff said they would return recommendations on standing committee structure at a later date.
