The Tuscaloosa Historic Preservation Commission approved a multi-part application (HPC 6725) on Dec. 10 for exterior alterations at 1104 Myrtlewood Drive, including enclosing an existing side screened porch, repairing deteriorated brick banding, extending a driveway, constructing a rear addition with conditioned spaces and a screened porch, and modifying the accessory garage.
Applicant Chandler Overcash described the project as a mix of maintenance and new construction, noting the owner’s interest in keeping many changes to the rear and matching existing materials. Overcash told the commission the owner would like to table possible front-window replacement because of budget constraints; commissioners and staff agreed tabling those front windows was acceptable and advised coordination with staff before returning the window portion to a future agenda.
Staff and commissioners clarified that any window replacements would be a separate application if pursued, and that the commission bases approvals on submitted materials. The commission voted unanimously to approve the current scope of work; staff will perform a final inspection when the work is complete.
Why it matters: The project involves both preservation maintenance and an addition that alters the primary structure; the commission highlighted the importance of preserving visible elevations and coordinating future window replacements.
The applicant should confirm final materials and dimensions with staff and return to the commission only for any changes that materially alter the approved elevations.
