Westfield council renames Triangle Park to Washington Rochambeau Trail Park

The Westfield Town Council voted to rename Triangle Park to Washington Rochambeau Trail Park, formalizing a proclamation that recognizes the town’s role on the Washington–Rochambeau Revolutionary Route.

The proclamation, read aloud during the meeting and signed in the council packet, thanked “Mr. Johnny F. Carawan” for his work with the W.A.R. Trail and stated, “I, Shelley Bridal, mayor of the Town Of Westfield, together with the town council... do hereby offer our deepest appreciation.” Peter Wong of the National Park Service spoke to the council and thanked Westfield for elevating its connection to the national trail.

Council members noted that the Historic Preservation Commission had endorsed the renaming; the council later approved the formal resolution to rename the park by voice and roll call. Council members said the town will follow up with new signage and planned interpretive materials to mark the site along the route.

The action completes a ceremonial recognition begun during the meeting’s proclamation and positions the intersection at Mount Avenue, Lawrence Avenue and Walnut Street as part of the town’s heritage programming ahead of national commemorations planned for 2026. The council did not provide a detailed budget or installation timeline for new signs during the meeting; staff indicated signage and marking would follow the adoption.
