Council committee debates resolution to review SNAP/benefit response; forwards resolution to full council with no recommendation

Councilmembers discussed a proposed resolution to convene a meeting in January to review lessons learned from recent disruptions to SNAP and other assistance programs and to plan improved local coordination.

Councilman Oliver Davis, a sponsor, said the aim was to gather the administration, community partners and council members for a structured review and to anticipate future disruptions. "What lessons did we all learn from the administration, from council, from community and partnerships?" Davis asked.

Some council members questioned whether the resolution was necessary because SNAP and WIC benefits were preserved in the federal reopening legislation. Councilmember White noted WIC and SNAP were included as a condition of reopening Congress, which reduces immediate risk, but others said planning across partners remained useful. Jordan Geiger spoke in favor of a council-led review and noted that federal appropriations do not guarantee funds will flow as expected.

The committee vote initially produced a tie; after additional procedural discussion members moved to forward the resolution to the full Council with no recommendation. The committee's final procedural action to send the resolution forward passed by a 3–1 vote in committee and the item will appear on the full Council agenda for consideration.
