Council approves demolition of nuisance property at 10909 M Street after owner asks for delay

The Omaha City Council authorized demolition of the long‑neglected property at 10909 M Street, approving a $310,000 quote from Eagle Hills Excavation Inc. after a public hearing in which the owner's representative requested additional time and outlined steps taken to secure and market the site.

Adam Smith, appearing by Zoom on behalf of Newport Blue Impact and the property's owner, said he had recently reclaimed the property from a prior owner, hired a security company, and arranged American Fence Company to replace missing posts. "I just wanted to introduce myself... I am trying to stop this from getting demolished," he said, asking the council for postponement while the owner continued remediation steps.

Council members said the site has been a recurring local nuisance for years and that cleanup efforts by the city and property owner had been insufficient to restore safety and neighborhood livability. Councilmember Rowe emphasized the high visibility of the property and the repeated complaints from neighbors. Several council members supported moving forward with demolition as a step to remove blight and make the parcel marketable for redevelopment.

The motion to proceed with demolition passed by roll call 7–0.
