Resident alleges police body‑cam violations; city says internal review found no wrongdoing

Fruita — During public comment at Tuesday’s council meeting, resident Benny Wilson alleged Fruita police officers are not activating body cameras on some 911 calls and asked the council and mayor to help schedule a meeting with the city attorney and police leadership to present his evidence.

Wilson, who identified himself as an auditor, said he has recordings showing cameras were turned on after officers walked away from school employees and asserted the policy requires activation on 911 calls. He said he has contacted police leadership and internal affairs and asked for a meeting with the city attorney, the chief and the lieutenant to present his evidence.

In reports later in the meeting, staff said they have met with Wilson and police lieutenants and that a lieutenant’s investigation to date found no wrongdoing. City staff encouraged Wilson to submit the evidence and said staff would continue communications; the manager also said policy review could proceed through the police commission or staff one‑on‑one meetings. No formal action was taken at the meeting.

What happens next: staff confirmed they will continue to communicate with the complainant and will consider the matter in the policy review process. Wilson requested a meeting with the city attorney, chief and council to present his evidence.
