Bristol Council endorses Somes (Soames) Heritage Area designation, stresses no land-use change

The Town of Bristol Council voted Dec. 10 to endorse a resolution supporting designation of the Soames (SOMS) area as a national heritage area. Andrea Rounds, speaking for the steering committee, outlined the group's goal to conserve and interpret regional history and to expand educational and tourism partnerships.

Council members praised the project's potential to safeguard historic and natural resources and to build local educational programming. Several members emphasized the endorsement was nonbinding and would not change local land‑use control: "It's not change any local control or land use," a council member noted during debate.

Discussion touched on outreach to federally recognized tribes. Rounds said three regional tribes had chosen not to engage at this stage but that the heritage area would keep doors open for future participation: "We offer a platform for all voices to be heard," she said. Supporters said the designation could bring federal resources for interpretation, collaborative conservation and tourism without altering municipal authority.

The council passed the endorsement by voice vote. Proponents said the designation could strengthen preservation partnerships, bring education opportunities for schools, and provide new cultural tourism resources to Bristol and neighboring communities.

Next steps: Steering-committee members will continue outreach and coordination with regional partners and tribes; the council's endorsement will be included in application materials for federal designation.
