Finance committee recommends residency waiver for Brockton police officer Spencer Benoit

BROCKTON — The Brockton Finance Committee on Dec. 15 voted to recommend a residency waiver for Officer Spencer Benoit.

Benoit told the committee he has served seven years as a sworn police officer (including school police) and described a family need: his daughter was born two months early, requires therapeutic speech services in Norwell and the family can reduce a daily commute from about 35–50 minutes to roughly 10 minutes if they purchase a house owned by his father‑in‑law. Benoit said the shorter trip would reduce strain on his daughter and family. Councilors noted Benoit’s seven years of service meets the residency‑requirement eligibility period mentioned in the ordinance and moved to recommend the waiver favorably to the full council.
