Commission hears year‑one pickleball data, keeps reservations in place for now

The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed first‑season usage and feedback for the newly opened Manhattan Park pickleball courts and declined to change the reservation approach immediately, asking staff to collect more data and publish user guidance.

Derek, Parks and Recreation director, told commissioners the courts opened around July 18 and experienced heavy reservation use. Staff tracked only reservation transactions (not informal drop‑in play) and estimated reservations will increase next summer. Derek said staff received roughly 8–10 pieces of feedback during the season and that the department can set reservation rules in the software, such as limiting bookings to 24 hours in advance.

Commissioners discussed options to address complaints that drop‑in players are displaced when a reserved player arrives. Suggestions included designating one court for drop‑in play, tightening booking windows, improving online peak‑hour guidance, using third‑party apps or locker‑style rentals, and public education about alternative nearby courts at Wealthy Elementary, Lakeside and Bridal Downs.

Derek said the department will continue the reservation system for a second full season, provide clearer online information about peak hours and alternative courts, and then reconvene the discussion after collecting year‑two data. The commission did not take a formal vote; the topic was treated as a feedback item.
