Commission reviews donated viewfinder proposal for Waterfront Park overlook

Commissioners offered generally favorable feedback Nov. 24 on a family’s offer to donate a non‑coin‑operated viewfinder for the southern overlook at Waterfront Park, and asked staff to confirm mounting, sightline limits and vandalism/security precautions.

Derek, Parks and Recreation director, said the manufacturer makes non‑coin units that cost between $4,000 and $5,000 and can be installed on deck boards or a small concrete pad. He emphasized that the viewing angles can be limited so the device would not provide direct views into neighboring homes. Commissioners asked about theft and overnight security and how the unit would be anchored; Derek noted the family offered to pay installation costs and that the department could place the unit where it would not impede bench users.

No permit vote was required; the item was presented for feedback and staff said it had the information needed to proceed with administrative follow‑up.
